Virginia Entertains Unbeaten Providence Tuesday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team wraps up a three-match homestand at 7 p.m. Tuesday when unbeaten Providence visits Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers (2-3-1) and Friars (5-0-2) will be meeting for just the second time ever.

Ticket Information
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for youth, seniors and faculty/staff. Group ticket orders of 20 or more tickets are $4.

Free parking is available in the University Hall, John Paul Jones Arena, McCue and Cage lots.

Virginia-Providence Series
Virginia and Providence have met just once previously, with the Cavaliers scoring a 2-0 win over the Friars on Oct. 29, 2000, at Klöckner Stadium.

Providence is part of the new-look Big East Conference this year. UVa already has faced one Big East opponent, St. John’s, this year. The Cavaliers won that match, 2-0.

Gelnovatch on Verge of Win No. 250
Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch needs one more victory to reach the 250-win plateau in his head coaching career at UVa. He owns a 249-103-34 record in his tenure and boasts the second-most wins in program history.

Last Time Out: Virginia 3, NC State 3 (2OT)
Matt Brown scored with six seconds remaining in regulation to cap a frenetic Virginia and pull the Cavaliers into a 3-3 draw with NC State Friday night. Virginia trailed by two goals before rallying over a manic final 15 minutes.

Darius Madison and Marcus Salandy-Defour also scored for the Cavaliers, which out-shot NC State 26-10.

Offense Rolling of Late
Virginia has scored six goals in its last two matches and eight over the last 207 minutes of game action. The Cavaliers tallied three goals in their first three matches combined. Darius Madison has a goal in each of the last two games.

Plenty of Offensive Threats
Virginia has scored 11 goals in six games this season. Nine different players have scored. UVa had 11 different goal scorers during the entire 2012 season. Brian James and Darius Madison each have a pair of goals this year.

Another Day, Another Great Opponent
Eleven of UVa’s 17 opponents this season are currently ranked or receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll (as of last poll on Sept. 17). UVa’s first five opponents all are currently ranked in the NSCAA poll: Louisville (22), St. John’s (7), Clemson (13), Wake Forest (9) and George Mason (23). Including NC State, UVa’s first six foes have a combined 26-9-2 record this season.

UVa still has matches on the docket with North Carolina (1), Notre Dame (2), VCU (8) and Maryland (17). Boston College and Providence – also on the UVa schedule – are receiving votes in the NSCAA poll.

Touting Providence
Providence is off to a 5-0-2 start, its best opening to a season since 2005. The Friars knocked off Boston University, 2-0, on the road on Friday. Freshman Julian Gressel leads the team with three goals and seven points. The Friars have taken nearly twice as many shots as their opponents (113-60). Keasel Broome has logged all the minutes in goal this year for PC, giving up six goals while recording a pair of shutouts.

Virginia returns to ACC action next Saturday, traveling to Syracuse for the first-ever match between the Cavaliers and Orange in men’s soccer. UVa is home next Tuesday (Oct. 1) for a matchup with No. 5 VCU.
