CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–Virginia softball head coach Blake Miller announced the Cavaliers’ 2014 schedule Tuesday (Sept. 24). UVa’s slate features 24 home games at The Park.
The Cavaliers will face at least eight participants from the 2013 NCAA Tournament, including Florida State, James Madison, Longwood, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, USC Upstate and Virginia Tech. UVa returns nine letterwinners and five starters from last year’s squad that went 21-28.
Virginia will open the season on the road at three tournaments in February, starting with a tourney at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. (Feb. 7-9). The UNCG Tournament will take place the next weekend (Feb. 15-16), followed by the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., which will feature some of the nations top teams. Virginia’s opponents and game times for the tournaments will be announced at a later date.
“We’re starting right off the bat with three good tournaments that will allow this big group of first-years to get loose and get their UVa careers going,” Miller said. “Those tournaments will help us get ready for the ACC schedule, which is tougher this year with the added weekend and a couple of midweek doubleheaders. The conference is a lot stronger this year with Notre Dame, Syracuse and Pitt joining the league. They are all high-caliber teams, so it will be tough, but it will be fun.”
UVa opens the ACC schedule March 1-2 at NC State before making its home debut March 7-8 against Florida State.
Added to the conference schedule this year are two midweek doubleheaders, where the Cavaliers will play at Georgia Tech on March 12 and host Maryland March 19. Syracuse (March 15-16) and Notre Dame (April 18-19) will make their first trips to Charlottesville as conference members, while UVa will make its first-ever trip to Pittsburgh March 29-30.
The Cavaliers’ home finale will be a doubleheader against Liberty on March 23, before the regular season finale at Boston College April 26-27.
Outgoing conference member Maryland will host the top eight conference schools in the ACC Tournament May 8-10 in College Park, Md.
Admission to all Virginia softball home games is free to the public.
