CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Defensive end and former UVa standout Tom Scott was announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday as one of its Class of 2013 Legends for the ninth annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game, which will be played in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 7.
Scott (1950-52), one of many standout players for Virginia in the early 1950s, played in the era of single platoon football as a stellar offensive and defensive end for the Cavaliers. Named a first-team All-American in 1952 by both the Associated Press and NEA, Scott helped lead Virginia to a 24-5 record during his three seasons, including an 8-1 mark and a No. 13 national ranking in 1951.
The first two-sport All-American for the Cavaliers, Scott was a member of UVa’s 1952 USILA National Championship lacrosse team, earning All-America honors that season. The 60th overall pick of the 1953 NFL Draft taken in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Rams, Scott played 12 seasons in the NFL, six years each with the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. He was twice named to the NFL Pro Bowl (1957-58), and was on New York Giant teams that played in NFL title games in 1961, 1962 and 1963.
Scott was inducted to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 1979. A native of Baltimore, Md., Scott now lives in Charlottesville, Va.
The Legends will be honored during this year’s Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game weekend at the ACC Night of Legends, sponsored by the Belk Bowl on Friday, Dec. 6, and on Dec. 7, during ceremonies at Bank of America Stadium for the ninth annual Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship. The ACC Football Championship game will be nationally televised with either a 7:45 p.m. (ESPN) or 8 p.m. (ABC) kickoff.
