CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Virginia field hockey team (9-1, 0-1 ACC) plays a pair of weekend road contests beginning on Friday, Sept. 27 when they take on No. 15 Wake Forest (6-1, 0-1 ACC) in Winston-Salem, N.C. Virginia closes out the weekend by playing at Liberty (4-3) on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.
Live streaming video is available for both games. The Wake Forest live video stream is available as a pay service, while the Liberty game’s feed is available for free.
Wake Forest trails 19-16 in the all-time series despite winning 14-straight meetings from 1999 to 2008. Virginia earned a 4-0 victory last season in Charlottesville.
It will be the first-ever meeting between Liberty and Virginia. The Lady Flames currently hold a 4-3 overall record, with the three losses coming by a combined three goals. The Lady Flames will host St. Louis on Friday afternoon before taking on the Cavaliers on Sunday.
Virginia and Wake Forest are both looking for their first ACC victory. Wake Forest fell 4-1 at No. 2 Maryland last week while the Cavaliers fell 2-1 to No. 1 North Carolina. Wake Forest has won five of its last six games including a 3-2 double-overtime victory at American last Sunday (Sept. 22).
Virginia is coming off a 6-1 victory Wednesday night over James Madison. Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) scored two goals with an assist. Freshman Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) also scored a pair of goals. Freshman midfielder Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England) logged three assists, with two off penalty corners and the other for setting up the second goal by Tata.Buckley came into the week leading the ACC in shots (63), points (22) and goals (9).
In the national rankings, Buckley is 10th in goals per game (1.0) and 13th in points per game (2.44).
Freshman Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), who scored the game-winning goal against Northwestern, is 18th in the nation with 0.89 goals per game and 37th with 1.78 points per game. Foust, with eight goals, trails only Buckley in the ACC rankings for goals-scored.
With her two goals against JMU, Tata is now tied with Foust with eight goals scored.
Virginia came into the week scoring 3.44 goals per game, which ranked ninth in the nation. The Cavaliers also rank ninth with a +2.02 scoring margin. After the JMU victory, Virginia improved to 3.70 goals per game and a +2.50 scoring margin.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) came into the week ranked 10th among all NCAA Division I goalkeepers with a 78.6 save percentage. Johnstone’s 1.27 goals-against average ranks 13th. Johnstone is second in the ACC, averaging 4.89 saves per game.
In addition to Johnstone’s saves, the Cavalier defenders have amassed seven defensive saves this season. Only two teams, Radford and Vermont, have more defensive saves this season. Senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) has two defensive saves. Senior Chloe Pendlebury (Perth, Australia) and freshman Jeannie Blackwell (Virginia Beach, Va.) each logged a defensive save in the victory over Northwestern.
The Cavaliers, who are in the midst of playing four games in a span of seven days, cap that stretch of by returning to Turf Field on Tuesday, Oct. 1, to host Radford at 6 p.m. Admission is free for all 2013 Virginia field hockey regular-season home games.
