CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.Branden Cogswell had four hits and drove in four runs to lead the Orange team to an 8-4 victory over the Blue Friday night in the second game of the Virginia baseball team’s annual Orange and Blue World Series at Davenport Field.

The Orange has now won the first two games of the first three-game series. The Blue can still win the first series, but must make up the run differential, which is five runs. The series continues at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Nathan Kirby started and earned the win after pitching five innings. Connor Jones took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and also walking three.

Freshman Matt Thaiss went 4-for-5 with four RBI to lead a 10-hit night for the Blue. Scott Williams also added three hits in a losing cause.

The Blue team scored first in the bottom of the third off a Thaiss two-out triple to right field that scored Mike Papi and John La Prise.

The Orange team countered with four runs in the top of the fourth. Taking advantage of three walks, the Orange scored off singles from Derek Fisher, George Ragsdale, and Cogswell.

The Blue added another run in the top of the seventh to cut the Orange lead to 4-3. After a Thaiss triple, freshman Daniel Pinero grounded out to first base to drive Thaiss home.

The Orange capitalized on one Blue error and two wild pitches to score three more runs in the top of the eighth to extend the lead.

A Cogswell single in the top of the ninth that ricocheted off Alec Bettinger’s glove allowing Irving to score to put the game out of reach for the Blue squad.

Orange & Blue World Series Format
There will be a pair of three-game series (Games 1-3 and Games 4-6 are separate series) as well as a Game 7. If a given team wins both games of either series, the third game of that series will be played based on run differential of the first two games to allow the trailing team a chance to still win the series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running up the score.

There is no admission charge for Orange and Blue World Series games and all seating is general admission. Free parking will be available in the University Hall lot. Fans should plan to enter Davenport Field for all fall games along the first-base line and not the main gate. The best route to reach this entrance is by using the Copeley Road crosswalk, the sidewalk and the road adjacent to the Lannigan Field track complex.

Concession and merchandise stands also will be open.
