CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team (13-2, 1-2 ACC) faces its third-straight ranked opponent, hosting No. 6 Boston College (10-2, 1-1 ACC) on Friday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at Turf Field.
Virginia dropped one spot in the NFHCA rankings after splitting a pair of road games last weekend, falling 4-1 at No. 5 Syracuse and winning 2-1 at No. 12 Albany. Boston College moved up from No. 9 to No. 6 after handing No. 2 Connecticut its first loss of the season, with the Eagles pulling out a 4-3 victory in overtime.
All seven ACC schools continue to be ranked in the top-20 with six of the teams – No. 1 Maryland, No. 2 UNC, No. 3 Syracuse, No. 7 Duke as well as No. 5 UVa and No. 6 BC – ranked in the top seven.
The BC game will be Virginia’s eighth overall and third-straight game against a top-20 opponent after taking on No. 5 Syracuse and No. 12 Albany last weekend. Both of Virginia’s losses this year have come against top-five ranked teams. BC has faced six ranked opponents, falling to then-No. 14 UMass, 4-2, and then-No. 2 Maryland, 3-2.
Boston College is last in the ACC in goals-against average, with opponents scoring 1.83 per game against the Eagles, but BC leads the conference with 6.58 saves per game. Virginia leads the ACC in shots, taking 18.87 per game. BC averages 17.42 shots per game.
Boston College’s Emma Pasteras is tied for second in the ACC with 30 points this season and also ranks second in goals scored with 10. Virginia senior forward Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia) leads the conference in both categories with 40 points and 17 goals.
Virginia comes into the week ranked No. 10 among all NCAA Division I teams averaging 3.33 goals per game and seventh with a 1.17 goals-against average, giving them the sixth-best scoring margin in the nation (+2.07).
Buckley scored two goals and had an assist last week, moving her into a tie for third place on the Virginia career points list with Cindy Carzo (1976-79) at 173. Buckley is 57 points behind Meredith Thorpe (1995-98), who is in second place and 65 points behind record-holder Paige Selenski (2008-10, 12). Buckley is now in fourth on the Virginia career goals list at 70. Carzo is in third place on the career goals list with 84.
Buckley, who was leading the nation in goals per game last week, is now third among all NCAA Division I players, averaging 1.13 per game. Buckley is sixth in points per game at 2.67. Buckley added her ACC-leading fourth defensive save of the season against Albany. She ranks fifth in the nation in defensive saves with freshman Jeannie Blackwood (Virginia Beach, Va.), who also had a defensive save against Albany, ranking 14th with three.
Senior Chloe Pendlebury (Perth, Australia) logged an assist on the Cavaliers’ first goal against Albany. Pendlebury, who has played on the defensive back line for most of her career, has a career-high eight assists this season to lead the team and ranks 29th in the NCAA.
Freshman Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her ninth goal of the season against Albany. Tata and fellow-freshman Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) are tied for second on the team with nine goals and 18 points apiece. They are currently two goals shy of ranking in the top-10 in the Virginia record book for goalies in a freshman season, trailing Michelle Vizzuso who netted 11 in her rookie campaign in 1995.
Freshman Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England) is already in the Cavalier freshman top-10 list with six assists so far, putting her in fifth place. The Virginia freshman record for assists in a season is 11, set by Buckley in 2010. Hyams also has scored five goals to give her 16 points, ranking her fourth on the team behind Buckley, Tata and Foust.
The Cavaliers finish off the weekend by hosting William & Mary on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. at Turf Field. Immediately following that game, No. 6 Boston College will take on Longwood (5-7, 3-0 NorPac) in a neutral site game at Turf Field. Admission is free for all 2013 Virginia field hockey regular-season home games.
