CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 6 Virginia field hockey team (14-3, 2-2 ACC) hosts No. 8 Duke (10-3, 2-1 ACC) on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. at Turf Field in Charlottesville for the Cavaliers’ final regular-season home game of the year.
Immediately following the game, there will be a special ceremony to honor the eight seniors on the Virginia roster as part of the annual Senior Day celebration.
Both the Cavaliers and Blue Devils played double-overtime games against ACC opponents last Friday with UVa prevailing 2-1 over BC, while Duke fell 2-1 to Syracuse. Three of Duke’s last five games have gone into double overtime with its Sept. 27 game against North Carolina being decided in a shootout, with the Blue Devils earning the 3-2 upset over the then-ranked No. 1 Tar Heels.
Virginia leads the all-time series against Duke, 31-16, including a 3-1 victory last season in Durham, N.C.
The Duke game will be the Cavaliers’ ninth game this season against an opponent ranked in the top-20 and the sixth time facing a top-10 team. It will also be the second time this season Virginia has faced a team ranked eighth with the Cavaliers defeating then-No. 8 Old Dominion, 5-3, back on Sept. 8.
Virginia comes into the week ranked sixth in the country with a 1.13 goals-against average and 10th in scoring margin at +1.81. Virginia is averaging 2.94 goals-per-game while Duke ranks last in the ACC with a 2.35 per-game average. The Cavaliers continue to lead the ACC with six shutouts.
Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia), one of the players who will be honored in Friday night’s Senior Day ceremony, continues to lead the ACC in points (40), goals (17) and defensive saves (4). She is ranked 12th in the nation in points per game (2.35) and seventh in goals per game (1.0) and defensive saves.
Junior Kelsey LeBlanc (Haverford, Pa.) has scored a goal in each of the last three games, including scoring UVa’s only goal against William & Mary and tapping in the game-winner in the 1-0 double-overtime game against Boston College. LeBlanc is one of five players on the team with double-digit points with 11 (four goals and three assists).
Freshmen Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) each have scored nine goals for 18 points. Fellow freshman Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, Kent, England), who had the assist on the game-winning goal against BC, has five goals and seven assists for 17 points.
The Cavaliers will wrap up the regular season on Friday, Oct. 25 when they play at No. 1 Maryland in a 6 p.m. game. Virginia then has a bye week before heading to Newton, Mass. for the ACC Tournament, being held Nov. 7-10 at Boston College.
