CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The ITA Atlantic Regional began Friday at Snyder Tennis Center on the Grounds at the University of Virginia.

The qualifying singles round wrapped up as eight individuals advanced to the main singles draw. The first round of the main draw doubles also concluded.

The Virginia women’s tennis team begins play at the regional on Saturday. The Cavaliers have five of the top 16 seeds in the main draw, including two of the top three. Sophomores Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) are the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. Freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) is the No. 9 seed, senior Li Xi (Kunming, China) is the No. 10 seed and sophomore Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) is the No. 12 seed. Senior Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) are also in the singles main draw. UVa sophomore Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) will not compete in singles after qualifying for the ITA National Indoor Singles Championship with her consolation title at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

The Cavaliers have four of the top 12 seeds in doubles. The tandem of Elbaba and Collins is the No. 2 seed in the draw, while Collins and Xi are No. 5 and Faure and Nauta are No. 8. Epstein and Peretz are the No. 12 seed.

A total of 88 singles players and 48 doubles pairs from 25 teams are facing off as individuals in singles and doubles from Oct. 18-22. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place in October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
