CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 16 Virginia women’s cross country team returns to action Saturday as it competes at the Pre-National Invitational, hosted by Indiana State University. The Cavaliers will run in the Blue Race of the meet, a 6K race that starts at 11:40 a.m., at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of this year’s NCAA Championships, in Terre Haute, Ind.

Virginia is one of 51 schools competing in the race, including 13 ranked in the current USTFCCCA top 30. Joining the Cavaliers in the race are No. 2 Florida State, No. 5 Georgetown, No. 6 Oregon, No. 11 Stanford, No. 12 Colorado, No. 14 Michigan, No. 18 Villanova, No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 20 Butler, No. 21 William & Mary, No. 23 Princeton and No. 27 Penn State.

The Cavaliers haven’t competed since winning the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 28. Senior Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.) finished second to lead the Cavaliers to the victory. First-years Maria Hauger (Shakopee, Minn.) and Sarah Fakler (Phoenix, Ariz.) followed in sixth and ninth place respectively. Junior Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.) was 11th and first-year Sara Sargent (Philadelphia, Pa.) was 14th to round out Virginia’s scoring five.

After the Pre-National Invitational, the Cavalier women will next compete at the ACC Championships on Nov. 1 in Kernersville, N.C.
