BOSTON–The Virginia rowing Varsity Eight finished as the top collegiate boat in the Championship Eights at the Head of the Charles Sunday (Oct. 20) in Boston. It is the third consecutive year the Cavaliers have earned the honor.
The Cavaliers’ top boat finished in a time of 16:36.529, fourth overall behind Cambridge Boat Club (15:59.549), USRowing (16:00.750) and London Training Center (16:16.336), all crews made up of national team members with Olympic and World Championship experience. Virginia finished ahead of collegiate crews from Yale (16:48.112), Notre Dame, Radcliffe and Michigan to claim the BNY Mellon Championship Cup.
“To come out as the top collegiate boat is a great feat,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “There were some really good crews here, including Yale and Notre Dame, who had great races and Radcliffe, who had a great day. We wanted to hold off the World Championship bronze medalist Canadian Eight (London Training Center) as long as we could and we did a good job of that.”
Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight placed 10th overall and was the top 2V boat in 17:11.548, ahead of top boats from Clemson, Princeton and Cornell.
In the Championship Fours, the Cavaliers’ Second Varsity Four and Varsity Four placed 10th and 11th in 19:30.543 and 19:31.066, respectively.
The program was well represented throughout the day as former Cavalier Inge Janssen (’10) was in the Cambridge Boat Club crew that won the Championships Eight and Susanne Grainger (’13) and Christine Roper (’11) were in the London Training Center that placed third.
On Saturday, nine Cavalier alums rowed to victory in the Women’s Alumni Eight in 16:15.48, ahead of second-place Michigan, who had UVa assistant coach Brett Sickler in its stroke seat.
The Cavaliers next compete at the Princeton Chase on Oct. 27 in Princeton, N.J.
