CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 24 Virginia men’s basketball team begins the 2013-14 season Friday (Nov. 8) against in-state foe James Madison. Tipoff at John Paul Jones Arena is set for 7 p.m. The Cavaliers begin their 109th season of men’s basketball and are 14-1 in their last 15 season-opening games.

The game will be streamed online on ESPN3 and broadcast on the Virginia Sports Radio Network. Live statistics (GameTracker) will be located on VirginiaSports.com, as well as the new Virginia Sports app, which is available free of charge through iTunes.

Ticket Information
Single-game tickets and Family Packages for this game are on sale. Tickets may be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com/tickets. Fans may also purchase tickets through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office by telephone and in person. The ticket office is located in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Telephone purchases can be made by calling 1-800-542-UVA1 (8821) or locally at 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets may also be purchased on game day at the JPJ box office starting at 5:30 p.m.

Virginia-James Madison Series
Virginia sports an 8-0 all-time mark, including a 5-0 mark in Charlottesville, against James Madison in the series that dates back to 1977-78. The Cavaliers and Dukes will meet for the first time since Dec. 16, 2003 when Virginia beat JMU 90-80 in Charlottesville. Virginia hosts James Madison for the first time at John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia: Tony Bennett (Green Bay, 1992), 76-53 in four seasons at UVa and 145-86 in seven seasons overall.
James Madison: Matt Brady (Siena, 1987), 88-82 in five seasons at JMU and 161-132 in 15 seasons overall.

Virginia Returns to Preseason AP Rankings
Virginia is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, marking its first preseason AP top 25 ranking since being ranked No. 11 to start the 2001-02 season.

Meet the Cavaliers
Seniors Joe Harris and Akil Mitchell headline a list of nine returning letterwinners that helped Virginia to a 23-12 record and postseason NIT appearance a season ago. In 2012-13, Harris averaged a career-high 16.3 points and Mitchell added career bests with 13.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Harris tallied a career-high 36 points against Duke and Mitchell had a team-leading 12 double-doubles. Harris earned All-ACC first-team honors, while Mitchell was named to the third team.

Sophomore guard Justin Anderson returns after averaging 7.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game last season. Anderson led Virginia in scoring during the NIT, averaging 19 points in three contests. Redshirt sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon returns to action after missing the 2012-13 season and last four games of 2011-12 with a foot injury. Brogdon averaged 6.7 points in 28 games as a freshman in 2011-12. Redshirt sophomore transfer Anthony Gillmakes his Virginia debut after sitting out last season after transferring from South Carolina. Gill averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game as a freshman for the Gamecocks in 2011-12.

Sophomores Mike Tobey, Evan Nolte and Teven Jones and junior Darion Atkins also return. Tobey, who helped Team USA to the gold medal at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships, averaged 6.8 points last season. Nolte added 5.7 points and shot 38.9 percent from 3-point range, while Jones started nine games at point guard. Atkins added 28 blocked shots and averaged 4.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Senior Thomas Rogers and sophomore Caid Kirvenround out the list of returnees.

Perrantes and Hall Highlight Newcomers
Freshmen London Perrantes and Devon Hall highlight a list of five newcomers this season. Walk-ons Maleek Frazier, Jeff Jones and Rob Vozenilekround out the 16-man roster.

Noting the Dukes
James Madison is coming off of its first Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship since 1994 and its fifth overall NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament appearance. The Dukes are returning seven players from last year’s championship roster, including Andrey Semenov who missed most of the 2012-2013 season due to injuries, as well as standout sophomores Ron Curry, Taylor Bessick and Charles Cooke. The Dukes, the defending CAA Champions, were selected to finish seventh in the CAA preseason poll this year out of the nine teams in the conference.
