Kolod Breaks UVa Record in 3-Meter Diving on Day One of Quad Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed first-day action of a quad meet against Penn State, Texas and West Virginia Friday evening (Nov. 8) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
After 20 events, the Virginia men lead West Virginia, 137-49, but trails Texas, 113-73, and Penn State, 94-92. The Longhorns lead WVU, 149-37, and lead PSU, 107-79. On the women’s side, the Cavaliers lead WVU, 146-33, and the Nittany Lions, 127-59, but trail Texas 110-76. UT leads PSU, 127-59, and WVU, 157-22.
Junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started off the day in grand style, breaking the UVa and AFC pool records on the men’s 3-meter diving boards with 425.78 points, finishing first. Kolod also claimed second on the 1-meter board with 372.45 points. Sophomore Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) placed third on the 3m with 383.93 points.
On the women’s side, sophomore Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) finished second on the 3-meter boards with 313.80 points, just off her own school record of 316.05.
In women’s swimming action, freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up a win in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:43.11, the eighth-fastest time in UVa history. Smith was also the anchor for the 400 medley relay, along with sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.), freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) and junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.), that won in a time of 3:39.49.
Bartholomew claimed the women’s 200 backstroke in a time of 1:55.30, while Simon was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.44, the seventh-fastest time in program history.
Williamson placed second in the 200 IM in 2:00.63, while freshman Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) was third in 2:00.77. Williamson also posted a third-place finish in the 200 back in 1:58.22.
In the 200 free relay, the foursome of freshmen Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.) and Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom), Naurath and senior Emily Lloyd (Severna Park, Md.) placed second in 1:32.28.
On the men’s side, sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) placed first in a time of 55.52, while senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was third in the 500 free in 4:25.51, followed closely by classmate Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) in fourth in 4:25.69.
Sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) placed third in the 200 back, just ahead of Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.) in fourth in 1:46.23. Camp was third in the 200 fly in 1:48.69, while junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) touched fourth in 1:49.31.
The quad meet continues Saturday at 9:45 a.m. with the 200 medley relay, 1,000 free, 50 free, 100 back, 200 breast, 100 fly, 200 free, 400 IM and 400 free relay events being contested.
