No. 14 Virginia Takes On Three Opponents Sunday at Hokie Duals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 14 Virginia wrestling team makes its first road swing of the year when it competes in the Hokie Duals on Sunday at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. Virginia (3-0) is slated to take on VMI at 9 a.m., No. 20 Wisconsin at 11 a.m. and Kent State at 1 p.m. The duals are being held in conjunction with the Hokie Open, in which several more Cavaliers also will compete.

The Cavaliers started the season in strong fashion last Saturday with wins over Anderson (46-3), Gardner-Webb (44-0) and West Virginia (41-6). UVa won 28 of the 30 individual bouts in cruising to the trio of victories. Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) won all three of his matches at 174 pounds. Gus Sako (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) recorded falls in both of his matches in his first bouts since redshirting the 2012-13 season.

Virginia has six wrestlers in the InterMat rankings – George DiCamillo (12th at 133), Joe Spisak (19th at 141), Sako (14th at 149), Nick Sulzer (fifth at 165), Doty (13th at 174) and Jon Fausey (ninth at 184).

VMI, Kent State and Wisconsin are opening their 2013-14 dual schedules this weekend. Wisconsin picked up convincing wins over Chattanooga (37-3) and Cumberland (51-0) Friday in its dual openers, while VMI and KSU each start dual action on Sunday.

Wisconsin boasts five ranked wrestlers in its lineup, highlighted by second-ranked Tyler Graff at 133 pounds; Graff is a three-time All-American who placed third last year at the NCAA Championships. Kent State’s lineup is led by a pair of ranked wrestlers, No. 11 Ian Miller at 157 and No. 16 Tyler Small at 141.

Virginia is next in action on Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Cavaliers battle No. 8 Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. UVa will hold a youth clinic from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the match.
