CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia midfielder Lucy Hyams was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Freshman of the Year in honors announced by the conference office today (Nov. 11).

The first Cavalier to be named ACC Freshman of the Year since Paige Selenski in 2008 and the fourth overall, Hyams started 19 times and played in all 20 of the Cavaliers’ games this season. A midfielder from Whitstable, Kent, England, Hyams finished the regular season ranked in the top 10 in the league in assists (10) and assists per game (0.50).

Hyams, who was named to the All-ACC second team in honors announced last week, was tied for second on the Cavaliers with 20 points, with five goals in addition to her 10 assists.

The ACC Freshman of the Year as well as the ACC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year and ACC Coach of the Year awards are decided by a poll of the conference’s seven head coaches.

Maryland senior forward Jill Witmer was voted the ACC Offensive Player of the year and the Terps’ senior defender Ali McEvoy earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Maryland’s Missy Meharg was named the Coach of the Year.

“Being honored as the best freshman in the ACC is outstanding,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “Lucy makes everyone around her better. I thank the coaches of the ACC for recognizing Lucy’s incredible impact as a freshman. Congratulations to Jill, Ali and Missy as well.”

Hyams joins Selenski, Meredith Thorpe (1995) and Meredith Elwell (1996) on the list of Cavalier field hockey players who have earned the ACC Freshman of the Year honor.

The Cavaliers earned an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Tournament and will face Massachusetts in a first-round game on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at Duke’s Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.
