CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia rowing seniors Elle Murray and Emily Pik have been named co-captains, head coach Kevin Sauer announced Tuesday (Nov. 12).
“The team has selected two outstanding young women in Elle and Emily to lead this program for the rest of the season,” Sauer said.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Murray was in the bow seat of the Varsity Eight that placed fourth at the 2013 NCAA Championships as well as rowing with the V8 that captured the 2013 ACC Championship and was named ACC Crew of the Year. In 2012, Murray was part of the Second Varsity Eight that won the ACC title and placed fifth at NCAAs to help the Cavaliers clinch the national championship. Already this year, Murray was part of the V8 that was the top collegiate boat at the Head of the Charles and was the top crew at the Princeton Chase.
A native of Darien, Conn., Pik was in the bow seat of the Varsity Four that finished fourth at NCAAs. Pik won the ACC Championship with the Novice Eight in 2011 and was named the team’s Thomas Temple Allan Rookie of the Year. This year, Pik has been in the bow of the 2V8 that placed 10th at the Head of the Charles and fifth at the Princeton Chase. Both Murray and Pik were named to the 2012-13 ACC Academic Honor Roll.
The Cavaliers conclude their fall season this Sunday (Nov. 17) with the Rivanna Romp on the Rivanna Reservoir in Earlysville, Va., at 9 a.m.
