Virginia Hosts NCAA Cross Country Southeast Regional Friday

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Southeast Regional Friday at Panorama Farms in Earlysville. It marks the first time in the 13-year history of the venue that it has hosted an NCAA meet.
The men’s 10K race is scheduled for noon and will be followed by the women’s 6k race at 1:15 p.m. Admission is free. Live results will be available and link on VirginiaSports.com.
The top-two teams and top-four individuals at each of the nine regional meets will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships to be held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 23. Thirteen teams will also earn at-large bids, to be announced on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Virginia women enter the meet as the top-ranked team in the Southeast Region and are ranked No. 11 nationally. William & Mary and Duke, ranked No. 19 and No. 28 nationally, respectively, follow Virginia in the regional rankings. Kentucky, NC State, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Louisville, Eastern Kentucky and Wake Forest round out the regional top 10 entering the meet, which features 42 teams. The Cavaliers have won the NCAA Southeast Regional three of the past five years (2008, 2010 and 2011).
The Virginia men look to repeat as NCAA Southeast Region Champions at Friday’s meet. They enter the meet ranked third in the region, behind nationally ranked Eastern Kentucky (No. 17) and North Carolina (No. 18). Virginia Tech, Duke, Louisville, NC State, Furman, William & Mary and Liberty round out the top 10 of the regional rankings. Friday’s meet will feature athletes from 40 schools.
Panorama Farms, located in Earlysville in northern Albemarle County, has been the home course of the Cavaliers since 2001. Friday’s meet marks the third collegiate championship event on the course as it also hosted the 2006 and 2007 ACC Championships.
