CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –The Virginia women’s basketball team (3-1) plays at West Virginia (3-1) on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va. The game will be broadcast live on WINA-AM with John Freeman and Larry Johnson calling the action.
Virginia owns a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series, but the Cavaliers have dropped the last two meetings, including falling 54-47 last year in Charlottesville. This will be only the second time the two have met in Morgantown as Virginia won, 85-72, in 1998 in West Virginia.
Both teams are riding three-game win streaks. West Virginia swept its three contests in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic last week, earning victories over Ole Miss (86-56), Washington State (88-66) and Hawai’i (59-56) in Honolulu.
Virginia edged Liberty, 61-60, on Tuesday night in Lynchburg, Va. The Flames outrebounded the Cavaliers, 52-35, the second time this season Virginia trailed an opponent by double-digits in rebounding. The Cavaliers countered by forcing Liberty into 30 turnovers, with Virginia players grabbing 20 steals. Senior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) led the attack with five steals. Eight of the Cavaliers’ 10 players in the game had at least one steal in the game. It was the first time UVa had 20 steals in a game since the Cavaliers grabbed 26 against Clemson on Feb. 12, 2013. Virginia is averaging 13.0 steals per game, with Florida State and Duke being the only two ACC teams to average more so far this season.
In the Liberty game, Virginia scored 35 of its 60 points off turnovers. It was the most points UVa scored off turnovers since scoring 35 points off 28 Appalachian State turnovers during the 2012 WNIT.
Junior center Sarah Imovbioh (Abuja, Nigeria) logged her third-straight double-double, scoring 10 points with 13 rebounds. Imovbioh, who leads the ACC in offensive rebounds per game, had seven O-boards against the Flames, bringing her per-game average on the offensive glass to 6.5. Imovbioh is currently fourth in the ACC in rebounding, averaging 11.0 boards per game.
Freshman guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) made one of Virginia’s three three-pointers at Liberty. This season, Mason has only shot four three-point shots, but she has made three of those attempts.
Senior guard Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) logged a season-high five assists at Liberty. Wolfe currently has a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Junior forward Sarah Beth Barnette (Lexington, Ky.) is currently second on the team averaging 5.0 rebounds pet game. She had a career-high seven rebounds in 13 minutes against High Point, following that performance with another seven-rebound game against LA Tech.
Despite coming off the bench in the last two games, sophomore guard Faith Randolph continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game, which ranks 11th in the ACC. Imovbioh is second on the team at 12.5 per game.
After averaging 4.0 points per game in her first two games, senior guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) has averaged 14.0 ppg in the last two games. Franklin averaged 14.3 ppg last season.
Next week, Virginia will face its first ranked opponent this season, taking on No. 4 Tennessee in the opening game of the Junkanoo Jam Tournament on Grand Bahama Island. The Lady Vols and Cavaliers will face off at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Virginia will play either Southern Methodist or Kansas State on Friday, Nov. 30 at either 5:45 or 8 p.m. in its final game of the tournament.
