Virginia Breaks Two School Records on Day Two of Ohio State Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio—The Virginia swimming and diving teams set two school records on the second day of the Ohio State Invite Saturday (Nov. 23) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

After two days, the Virginia women lead with 766 points, ahead of Florida (717), Purdue (432.5), Ohio State (417.5) and Kentucky (275). The UVa men sit in third with 545 points, behind Ohio State (795) and Florida (716), but ahead of Kentucky (341).

Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) won the women’s 100 back in a school, McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and ACC record time of 50.73, an automatic NCAA-qualifying mark. Freshman Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) was third in 53.72, the ninth-fastest mark on UVa’s all-time list, and seniors Charlotte Clarke (Adelaide, Australia – 53.86) and Meredith Cavalier (Stafford, Va. – 53.92) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The 200 medley relay of Bartholomew, freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) and senior Emily Lloyd (Severna Park, Md.) finished second with an automatic NCAA-qualifying time of 1:37.67, the fourth-fastest relay in UVa history.

Simon became the first Cavalier woman to break the one-minute barrier in the 100 breaststroke, placing second in a time of 59.89. Sophomore Natalite Martin (Haymarket, Va.) placed fourth in 1:02.86, the ninth-best mark on UVa’s all-time list, and freshman Kaleigh Rosenburg (Leesburg, Va.) was eighth in 1:03.72.

In the women’s 200 free, freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed first in a time of 1:45.09, the third-quickest mark on UVa’s all-time list. Senior Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) was fourth in 1:47.14, while junior Kelly Offutt (Reisterstown, Md.) was eighth in 1:48.78.

The Cavaliers went 2-3 in the women’s 400 IM, with junior Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.) touching second in 4:10.02 and sophomore Haley Durmer (Decatur, Ga.) third in 4:11.19. Senior Hillary Petersen (Gainesville, Fla.) was eighth in 4:17.68.

Williamson finished fourth in the women’s 100 fly in 53.27, ahead of Casey in seventh (53.94).

The women’s 800 free relay of Smith, Williamson, senior Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and Jones placed second in 7:07.95.

On the women’s 1-meter diving boards, sophomore Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) placed sixth with a score of 264.65, while classmate Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) was eighth with 255.80 points.

On the men’s side, sophomore Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) touched second in the 100 breast in 53.79. His prelim time of 53.78 ranks sixth on UVa’s all-time list.

In the 100 back, sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) finished second in 47.05, just ahead of senior Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.) in third in 47.08. Junior Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was eighth in 48.77.

The 200 medley relay team of Murfee, Kaeser and seniors Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Jake Pearce (Tusla, Okla.) placed fourth in 1:27.54, while the 800 free relay of Camp, Buerger and freshmen Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and Barry Mangold (Rockville, Md.) also placed fourth in 6:30.16.

On the men’s 3-meter diving boards, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished sixth with a score of 330.70, while sophomore Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) was eighth with 301.50 points.

Camp and senior Nathan Hart (Asheville, N.C.) were seventh and eighth in the 100 fly in 47.99 and 48.68. Camp’s prelim time of 47.26 ranks fifth on UVa’s all-time list.

Junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) placed eighth in the 400 IM in 3:49.25.

The Ohio State Invite concludes Sunday (Nov. 24) with the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, platform diving and 400 free relay being contested. Prelims begin at 9 a.m., with the finals starting at 3 p.m.
