Three Cavaliers Named to NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three members of the Virginia men’s soccer team have earned 2013 All-South Atlantic Region honors, presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Midfielder Eric Bird (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) was a first-team selection, midfielder Jordan Allen (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) was a second-team pick and forward Darius Madison (So., Philadelphia, Pa.) was a third-team honoree.
Also named second-team All-ACC, Bird leads the Cavaliers with seven goals and 19 points this year. He also is tied for the team lead with five assists. The team captain has played in all 23 games, making 22 straight starts. He ranks seventh in the ACC in goals and points and ninth in assists. He also was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team this year. Bird owns a goal and two assists in the NCAA tournament, with assists on the game-winning goals against St. John’s and Marquette.
Allen was a third-team All-ACC honoree and also was named to the ACC’s All-Freshman Team. He is one of three Cavaliers to start all 23 games this season and is tied for the team lead with five assists. Allen scored the game-winning goal in the NCAA quarterfinals against UConn and also recorded goals against in the regular season against St. John’s and Syracuse.
Madison was named to the All-ACC second team and ranks second on the team with six goals and 15 points in 22 games this year. He is tied for 10th in the ACC in goals. Madison was named the College Soccer News National Player of Week and ACC Player of Week on Oct. 28 after scoring both Virginia goals in a win at Notre Dame as UVa handed the Fighting Irish their lone loss of the season. Madison has had a strong NCAA tournament, with a goal and an assist in NCAA tournament; he recorded the eventual game-winning goal in Virginia’s 3-1 NCAA tournament win over Marquette in the round of 16.
Virginia (13-5-5) returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 13) when it plays Maryland in the semifinals of the NCAA College Cup at PPL Park in Philadelphia. The match will be televised by ESPNU.
