Cavaliers Dominate Tennessee on First Day of Winter Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 13 Virginia women’s tennis team dominated No. 31 Tennessee during first-day action of the UVa Winter Invitational Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers went 6-1 in singles and 6-1 in doubles against the Lady Volunteers.
Claiming singles wins for Virginia were No. 11 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), No. 43 Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.), No. 85 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Marie Faure (Toulouse, France), Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.). Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) added a win over Marshall’s Dana Oppinger.
Virginia’s No. 8 tandem of Elbaba and Pierson posted a pair of victories to lead the Cavaliers in doubles. Elbaba and Pierson beat Joanna Henderson and Victoria Olivarez, 6-0, and Henderson and Eve Repic, 6-2. Also posting wins were Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Xi, Epstein and Nauta, Faure and Peretz and Nauta and Xi.
The UVa Winter Invitational will crown individual champions in singles and doubles, as no team scoring is being used. Each player will be assigned points per win and loss according to her position in singles and doubles. The players with the most points at the end of the weekend will be named the singles and doubles winners.
No. 31 Tennessee, No. 39 VCU, No. 58 Utah and Marshall are joining Virginia in the tournament. The teams will play singles and doubles each day in a round-robin format. Action continues Sunday at 9 a.m. and on Monday at 8 a.m. Admission is free.
