Charlottesville, Va. – Student-athletes who compete for Virginia’s athletics programs recorded a superlative academic performance during the Fall 2013 semester. The overall GPA for UVa’s 667 student-athletes last semester was 3.0. This was the highest overall GPA recorded for Virginia student-athletes in the last decade. A total of 82 percent of UVa’s student-athletes earned a GPA of 2.5 or better with 53 percent recording a mark of 3.0 or better.

A dozen student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the semester.

“Our student-athletes and staff work hard every day to achieve success in the classroom and our athletic endeavors,” said Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage. “These numbers indicate that we are providing an environment for academic success for which we are proud.”

A total of 14 of UVa’s 22 athletics programs earned a GPA of 3.0 or better during the semester. There were 16 teams that improved their team GPA from Fall of 2012 to Fall of 2013. That group included the sport programs of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, rowing, women’s soccer, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s track and field.

There were nine Cavalier athletic programs that recorded their highest cumulative GPA in the last 10 years. That group features the men’s basketball, football, men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, rowing, women’s soccer and women’s swimming and diving teams.
