CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia wrestlers earned championships Saturday (Jan. 25) at the Appalachian State Open in Boone, N.C. Competing unattached, Will Mason (R-Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.), Andrew Atkinson (Fr., Lynchburg, Va.) and TJ Miller (Fr., Medford, Va.) won titles at 125, 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.

Emilio Martinez (Fr., Platteville, Colo.) also took runner-up honors at 133, while Tyler Askey (Fr., Newnan, Ga.) earned a third-place finish at 174.

Mason won three straight bouts to win the 125 crown and earn his first college championship. He downed Appalachian State’s Vito Pasone in the championship match.

Atkinson captured his second straight open title; he also won the Franklin and Marshall Open on Jan. 4. He stormed to the title, winning four straight matches with little challenge. He started with a pair of falls before his closest match, an 8-2 decision over NC State’s Beau Donahue. He defeated Virginia Tech’s Nick Anderson, 11-4, in the championship match.

Miller also rolled to a championship at 149 with four straight wins for his first college crown. He piled up points in his first three bouts, winning 11-6, 13-6 and 10-4 before downing Appalachian State’s Aaron Scott for the championship.
