Virginia Travels to NC State Saturday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to NC State Saturday (Feb. 1) for a meet at 3 p.m. at the Casey Aquatic Center in Raleigh, N.C.
The Cavalier women (9-1) are tabbed No. 7 in the latest CSCAA national poll, tying the highest-ever ranking in school history. UVa was also ranked No. 7 back in 2000. The Virginia men (5-4) are ranked No. 20 nationally. Both of NC State’s teams are currently ranked No. 21.

Last weekend, the Cavalier squads swept Duke on Friday (Jan. 24) and split with North Carolina on Saturday (Jan. 25). Both meets against UNC came down to the final relay, with the women prevailing, 152-146, and the men falling, 154-145.
Junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) was named the ACC Female Swimmer of the Week after winning the 100 fly and 200 IM against North Carolina, leading the Cavaliers’ comeback.
Sophomores Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) and Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) and freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) each picked up two individual wins against the Tar Heels. Corbett swept the diving events (1- and 3-meter), Bartholomew won the backstroke events (100 and 200) and Simon touched first in the breaststroke events (100 and 200).
On the men’s side, the Cavaliers posted 1-2-3 sweeps in the 1,000 free, 100 back and 500 free. Seniors Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) and Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Rodney Fentress (Mechanicsville, Va.) went 1-2-3 in both the 1,000 free and 500 free, while sophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.), junior Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Jack Murfee (Nashville, Tenn.) swept the 100 back.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they host Pitt on Feb. 8. Diving action will commence at 9:30 a.m., with swimming scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Virginia’s 20 seniors will be honored in a ceremony in between the diving and swimming at noon.
