CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia sophomore Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday (Feb. 4).

No. 11 Elbaba went 2-0 in No. 1 singles action and 2-0 in No. 1 doubles play as the No. 14 Cavaliers defeated No. 44 VCU (6-1) and No. 33 South Carolina (5-2) last week.Elbaba defeated VCU’s Cindy Chala 6-1, 6-2 and South Carolina’s Elixane Lechemia 6-1, 6-3 in singles action.

In doubles play, Elbaba paired with freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) to beat VCU’s Ludivine Burguiere and Chala 6-3 and South Carolina’s Meghan Blevins and Lechemia 7-5.

Elbaba is currently 14-2 in singles and 18-2 in doubles with Pierson.

Virginia hosts the 2014 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, Feb. 7-10 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers’ first round match will be Friday at 6:30 p.m.
