CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team, ranked No. 7 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 8 in this week’s Warrior/Inside Lacrosse media poll, returns to action on Saturday at Richmond, a game that marks the Spiders first-ever NCAA men’s lacrosse game. Richmond’s club men’s lacrosse program was elevated to NCAA Division I status for the 2014 season.

After never playing before Feb. 14 in any given season, UVa will play its second game of 2014 before that calendar date. UVa is coming off an epic win over No. 12 Loyola on Thursday. After squandering an eight-goal lead, UVa scored with one-tenth of a second left in regulation on a goal by Ryan Tucker to force overtime. James Pannell found the back of the net in overtime to help the Cavaliers escape victorious over the Greyhounds.
Saturday marks the first meeting between the Cavaliers and Spiders in men’s lacrosse. UVa currently owns a 61-game winning streak against programs from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Cavaliers last loss to a Commonwealth opponent was in 1977 to Washington & Lee, then a NCAA Division I program in men’s lacrosse.
Dan Chemotti is in his first season as the head coach of Richmond after being the top assistant on Charley Toomey’s staff at Loyola, including being part of the Greyhounds’ 2012 NCAA title team. This is Chemotti’s first season as a head coach. Richmond’s team is a mix of recruits and members of UR’s former club program. The Spiders are a part of the Atlantic Sun Conference for men’s lacrosse, the same league that VMI plays in, and are the only other NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse program in the Commonwealth.

On the docket for the Cavaliers after Richmond is a trip to the City of Brotherly Love on Feb. 15 to face the Drexel Dragons. UVa returns home on Feb. 22 to host Rutgers.

Reserved seats for men’s home games are on sale for $10. Single-game general admission adult tickets for men’s home games are $8, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $6 each. General admission tickets for groups of 20 or more are priced at $4.
