Lavender Sets School Record 200m Record at Virginia Tech Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia track and field teams concluded action at the “Doc” Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet on Saturday with day two of the meet at the Rector Field House. The Cavaliers took on a strong field that included two ranked men’s teams and three top-10 women’s teams.
“The group responded to the challenge today,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “It was a much better overall effort. We had some individuals that stepped up and make progress today.”
The highlight of the meet came in the women’s 200m where junior Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) set an indoor school record with a time of 23.94. She now holds both the indoor 200m and 400m school records, having set the 400m record on the same track in Blacksburg at last year’s ACC Championships.
“It was Jordan’s first 200m of the season,” said Fetzer. “To open with an indoor PR and school record shows how much further ahead of last year she is at this point.”
Also on Saturday, first-year Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) made his debut in the triple jump, coming in second with a jump of 49’2.5″, the 10th best in school history and one inch shy of the Cavalier freshman record.
“This was Aaron’s season opener,” said Fetzer. “Coach [Mario] Wilson had him going from a short approach. Based on that, his performance was significant. He is a talented young man that has a bright future as long as he stays focused and continues to work on the finer details of the event.”
Virginia will return to action next week with the team splitting up to compete at two events. The team will send athletes to the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
