CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia attackman James Pannell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon. It is the first career honor for the sophomore from Smithtown, N.Y.

Pannell helped lead No. 7 UVa to a 2-0 record on the week with a combined eight goals and two assists in an overtime win against No. 12 Loyola and a road win at Richmond.

Pannell’s assist with one-tenth of a second left forced overtime against the Greyhounds. In the overtime period Pannell scored his fourth goal of the game to elevate UVa to victory the season-opening win over Loyola.

Against Richmond Pannell again scored a game-high four goals and dished out one assist. Pannell registered UVa’s last two goals against the Spiders, breaking an 11-11 tie and giving UVa just enough space to win, 13-12.

Pannell is the first Cavalier to earn a weekly honor from the ACC since Nick O’Reilly was the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 19, 2013.

Duke’s Casey Carroll was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday when the Cavaliers travel to the City of Brotherly Love to face the Drexel Dragons. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
