Tallahassee, FL – The Virginia women’s golf team beat the winter storm out of town that dumped snow on Charlottesville to travel to Florida State this weekend for its first event of the spring. The Cavaliers will compete in the Florida State Match-Up Tournament Feb. 14-16, at the Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee. The event is the most unique event in all of college golf as the 12 teams and 60 individuals play in pairs for a Match-Up championship, a team championship and an individual championship.

The 30th-ranked Cavaliers will be joined by No. 12 Clemson, No. 14 South Carolina, No. 31 Mississippi State, No. 35 Kansas, No. 39 Texas A&M, No. 46 Notre Dame, No. 47 Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast, Furman, Kansas State and Mercer in the second annual Florida State Match-Up.

The 12 participating teams will tee-off in twosomes during the first two rounds and play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes consist of partners playing together: Florida State/Texas A&M, Notre Dame/South Carolina, Furman/Kansas, Mercer/Florida Gulf Coast and Kansas State/Mississippi State. UVa and Clemson will be matched up during the competition.

The match-up portion of the tournament is determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total. At the end of the tournament, the partners with the lowest score will win the Match-Up championship. The team and individual champions will also be crowned.

The Virginia lineup includes Elizabeth Brightwell, Lauren Diaz-Yi, Briana Mao, Portland Rosen and Lauren Coughlin. Brightwell led UVa in the fall with a 74.64 stroke average while playing in all four of the team’s tournaments.

The University of Georgia won the tournament’s inaugural championship in 2013 with the Bulldogs and Oklahoma partnering to win the match-up championship. Erica Popson of Tennessee and Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia shared individual honors in the inaugural event.

The Southwood Golf Club will serve as the site for the 2014 NCAA East Regional Championship scheduled for May 8-10.
