CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (0-2) plays its second of five-straight home games, hosting Richmond (1-1) on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m.
The game is scheduled to be played at Klöckner Stadium. However, the game may be moved to University Hall Turf Field, depending on field conditions. The final decision on game location will be announced on Wednesday. Please check VirginiaSports.com and/or Twitter (@uvawomenslax) for updates.
The Cavaliers own a 33-3-1 all-time record against the Spiders, including a 19-1 home record. Virginia has won each of the last seven meetings with its last loss coming in an 8-7 game at Richmond in 2006. Virginia earned a 13-7 victory at Richmond last season after trailing 7-6 at halftime and then holding the Spiders scoreless in the second half.
Richmond has four players with three or more goals, with four goals each from juniors Emily Doyle and Anna Jeszick to lead the team. Doyle has four of the team’s five assists this season. This week, the Atlantic 10 Conference named freshman Emily Castle its first Rookie of the Week this season. Through the first two games, Castle has scored three goals on five shots and is tied for the team lead with four ground balls.
Virginia comes into the game with an 0-2 record, the first time in program history that the Cavaliers have dropped their first two games of the season. After falling to No. 4 Northwestern in the season-opener, the Cavaliers were upset 16-12 on Saturday (Feb. 15) by No. 9 Loyola. Virginia led 5-3 at halftime, but the Greyhounds scored 13 goals in the second half.
Three Cavaliers logged hat tricks against the Greyhounds with senior Maddy Keeshan (Greenwich, Ct.) and juniors Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) each scoring three goals. It was the second-straight hat trick for Swan who also scored three goals while also adding an assist against Northwestern. Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.), who scored four goals against Northwestern, added her fifth goal of the season against Loyola.
With the loss to Loyola, Virginia fell to No. 9 in the IWLCA Week 2 poll. The Cavaliers were ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll, rising to No. 6 in the Week 1 poll.
Virginia will face its second top-five-ranked opponent of the season when the Cavaliers host No. 2 Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in the first meeting of the two teams as conference opponents.Single-game reserved seats are available for all women’s home games for $7. Single-game general admission adult tickets for women’s home games are $5, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $4 each.
