Three Cavaliers Named to 2013 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three members of the Virginia men’s soccer team have earned spots on the 2013 All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team, announced Wednesday (Feb. 19) by the conference. Riggs Lennon (Fr., Paradise Valley, Ariz.), Todd Wharton (So., Glen Allen, Va.) and Ryan Zinkhan (Jr., Fredericksburg, Va.) each were named to the team. Wharton and Zinkhan each were honored for the second time.
Wharton started all 24 matches in the Cavaliers’ midfield and led the team in minutes played (2,226). He tied for second on the team with six goals and 15 points. Four of his goals came off penalty kicks, all of which came in the postseason, including the Cavaliers’ score in the NCAA College Cup against Maryland. He scored a pair of goals in the ACC tournament and was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team.
Zinkhan appeared in every game of the 2013 season, making 18 starts. He scored five goals, which was fourth on the team. Two of his scores came in NCAA tournament play, including the eventual game winner in the second round against St. John’s. He also recorded a goal in UVa’s quarterfinal win over Connecticut. Zinkhan is majoring in foreign affairs.
Lennon had a strong freshman campaign, playing in 21 matches primarily at forward. He also made six starts. He tied for fourth on the team with five goals, including three in ACC play. He scored a pair of goals in the Cavaliers’ win over Pitt on Oct. 4. Lennon also converted on a penalty kick in the shootout win over Notre Dame in the ACC tournament semifinals.
