Virginia Defeats Pacific, Falls to BYU

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The Virginia softball team defeated Pacific, 6-5, after falling to BYU, 9-0 in five innings, Thursday at the Mary Nutter Classic. The Cavaliers move to 2-8 on the season.
Against the Tigers (2-6), the Cavaliers used three two-run innings to win, 6-5. After Pacific scored four runs in the top of the first, UVa responded with back-to-back singles by senior Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) and both came home on a double by freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
The Cavaliers tied the game in the second after Harris hit a two-out single, stole second base and scored on a double by Velk. Velk then stole third and came home on a single by freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.).
After Pacific regained the lead, 5-4, in the top of the fourth, senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.), Harris and Velk each singled to lead off the inning, scoring Bowdren. Harris was thrown out trying to advance to third, but when Velk stole third base a few plays later, she came home on a throwing error by the Tigers.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) earned the complete game win, allowing the five runs (three earned) with two strikeouts to improve to 2-8 on the season.
Cassidy Gustafson (0-2) allowed all six runs (five earned) in four innings of work for Pacific in the loss.
BYU (5-6) won the first game of the day, 9-0 in five innings, after McKenna Bull (1-3) pitched a shutout with six strikeouts in five innings.
Park and freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) had the only hits for the Cavaliers, while the Cougars took advantage of five unearned runs against Chapdelaine, who took the loss.
The Cavaliers return to action Friday when they play Oregon State at 11 p.m. Eastern.
