Virginia Ranked a Program-Best No. 3 in Latest ITA Rankings

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia is ranked a program-best No. 3 in this week’s ITA Women’s Tennis Rankings, announced by the ITA Tuesday (Feb. 25). The No. 3 ranking surpasses Virginia’s No. 6 ranking in 2012.
The Cavaliers (7-2) made the biggest jump in the team rankings, moving up 10 places from No. 13 to No. 3 after upsetting top-ranked Duke (5-2) and winning at No. 62 Boston College (6-1). The Cavaliers’ win against Duke marked their second win against a top-ranked opponent in school history. Last season, Virginia defeated then-No. 1 North Carolina 4-3 in Chapel Hill.
In addition to Virginia’s recent wins against Duke and Boston College, the Cavaliers defeated then-No. 7 Texas A&M (4-0) and then-No. 12 Alabama (4-1) on Feb. 8-9 at the 2014 ITA National Women’s Tennis Indoor Team Championships at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
Virginia has four players ranked in singles and one tandem ranked in doubles. Sophomore Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) is ranked a program-high No. 4 in singles and No. 7 in doubles with freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.). Sophomore Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) is ranked No. 42 in singles, while Pierson is No. 47 and sophomore Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) is No. 58.
The Cavaliers continue ACC action at Syracuse on Saturday, March 1. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
