CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team opened its 2014 spring exhibition schedule with a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh. UVa avenged a 2013 defeat to the Riverhounds.

Riggs Lennon (So., Paradise Valley, Ariz.) scored the game’s first goal in the 27th minute off a feed from Darius Madison (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.).

The Cavaliers tacked on a second goal in the 60th minute. After Todd Wharton (So., Glen Allen, Va.) was fouled in the box, he stepped to the penalty spot and buried the PK. Wharton was 4-for-5 in PK attempts during the 2013 season.

Virginia used 23 players in the contest, including three goalkeepers. Calle Brown (R-Sr., Leesburg, Va.), Jeff Gal (Jr., Bartlett, Ill.) and newcomer Jeff Caldwell (Todd, N.C.) all saw playing time in goal for the Cavaliers.

Virginia continues its spring season on Saturday, March 22 with a 5 p.m. exhibition match against the Richmond Kickers at City Stadium in Richmond.

UVa will play one home exhibition in the spring season: April 12 against VCU. Please note that match has been moved to a 10 a.m. start time at Klöckner Stadium.
