No. 7 UVa Falls in ACC Action at No. 11 Notre Dame, 18-9

SOUTH BEND, IND. – No. 7 Virginia (6-2, 1-1 ACC) could not overcome a 9-3 run by No. 11 Notre Dame (3-2, 2-0 ACC) in the fourth quarter, falling to the Fighting Irish Sunday evening at the Loftus Sports Center, 18-9. The game was moved inside to the Loftus Sports Center on Saturday morning due to low weather temperatures in the South Bend region.
“We had too many mistakes across the board,” said Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia. “Different guys at critical moments. It was no one guy or no one thing. I thought we played well in the third quarter and felt we had some momentum heading into the fourth quarter, but then we had three failed clears, couldn’t pick the ball up and Notre Dame was sharp in this environment. I give them all the credit. We have been making too many mistakes and today we faced a team that was ready to pounce on that.”
Zed Williams ripped the game’s first goal on a pass from Owen Van Arsdale at the 11:38 mark, but the rest of the first half belonged to Notre Dame. UVa held the Fighting Irish in check most of the first quarter, yielding a goal with seven seconds left to Sergio Perkovic.
The goal by Perkovic began an 8-1 Notre Dame run, seven of which came in the second period. Tyler Brenneman scored at the 6:05 mark to cap the run. Up to the point of Brenneman’s goal UVa had only managed seven shots in the game.
Mark Cockerton scored an extra-man goal during the Irish spurt. Ryan Tucker scored an unassisted goal with 15 seconds left in the second period to send UVa into the intermission chasing five goals, 8-3.
Scoring was low in the third period, but UVa held the advantage in the scoring column, 3-1. UVa finished the frame trailing by three goals, 9-6. Cockerton, Pat Harbeson and Greg Coholan all scored during the run.
Notre Dame bounced back, outscoring UVa 9-3 in the final quarter to secure the win. Tyler German, Tucker and Cockerton all scored for UVa, but it wasn’t enough. Cockerton’s final goal secured the senior his 19th career hat trick.
Notre Dame outshot UVa 40-26, including 13-6 in the deciding final frame. Notre Dame also won the ground ball (34-21) and faceoff (22-8) battles. UVa goalie Matt Barrett had a game-high 10 saves as the Cavaliers won that battle.
UVa returns to action on Saturday in the quest for the Doyle Smith Cup when Johns Hopkins comes to Klöckner Stadium.
