CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (3-5, 0-2 ACC) will take on James Madison (4-3, 0-0 CAA) on Wednesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. at University Hall Turf Field.
The game was scheduled to be played at Klöckner Stadium, however it has been moved to University Hall Turf Field because of adverse field conditions.Tickets for the game may be purchased at the box office at the Turf Field starting one hour prior to the game, however all sales are CASH ONLY. Tickets can also be purchased in advance on the VirginiaSports.com website.
Season tickets for the game are valid entry as general admission tickets.
General admission adult tickets for women’s home games are $5, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVa faculty and staff tickets are $4 each.
Virginia leads the all-time series against James Madison, 29-12-1, having won the last two meetings, but is 2-2 in the last four match-ups. In UVa’s 10-3 road win last season, Virginia won 11 draw controls to James Madison’s four. Virginia also won the ground ball battle, 13-8, and outshot the Dukes 30-12. Goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) shut out the Dukes in the first half, making five saves.
James Madison has dropped its last two games, an 8-7 loss on Saturday at Rutgers and a 14-13 loss at UConn on March 9. The Dukes have been playing a lot of tight games with each of their last five games being decided by one goal, going 3-2 in that span.
JMU has wins over Penn State (11-10), Loyola (8-7) and opened the season with a 14-11 win over Virginia Tech, the only other ACC team the Dukes have played so far this season. Stephanie Finley leads the team with 28 points, scoring a team-high 19 goals. She is tied with Emily Rhoads for the team’s assist lead at nine. Finley also paces the Dukes on draw.
The Dukes are receiving votes in this week’s IWLCA Coaches’ Poll but are no longer receiving votes in the Brine Media Poll. JMU has not been ranked in the Coaches’ Poll this season, but has been ranked as high as No. 19 in the Brine Media Poll.
After falling 15-13 to unranked Princeton on Saturday, Virginia fell from No. 6 to No. 14 in this week’s IWLCA Coaches Poll
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) had her fifth hat trick of the season at Princeton. Blue is eighth in the ACC, averaging 2.75 goals per game.Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) is third in the ACC and 21st in the nation, averaging 3.1 goals per game. Swan had back-to-back hat tricks last week, scoring four goals at W&M and three at Princeton. Swan is sixth in the ACC and 25th in the nation in points per game, averaging 3.38. Last week, she posted 12 points in the two games, moving her up from 50th in the nation to 25th. Swan had a career-high eight points at William & Mary, with four goals and four assists. She scored her four goals on just five shots.
Junior Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) had back-to-back four-point performances in the two games last week, scoring three goals with an assist at William & Mary and scoring a season-high four goals at Princeton. Stephens, who averages 2.50 points per game, has had a goal or an assist in each of the last seven games.
Freshman Posey Valis (Baltimore, Md.) scored two goals at William & Mary, the first two of her career. She added an assist at Princeton.
Colgan is ranked third in the nation and leads the ACC in saves per game, averaging 11.0 per contest. Colgan logged eight saves at Princeton, including stopping six shots in the first half.
This will be the third time in six home games that the Cavaliers will play at Turf Field instead of Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers are 1-1 at Turf Field and 1-2 at Klöckner Stadium.
Next up, Virginia will play at No. 8 Duke (6-3, 1-1 ACC) on Saturday, March 22 at 3 p.m. The Cavaliers return to Klöckner Stadium on Wednesday, March 26 when they host Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
