Awendaw, S.C. – The No. 10 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for fifth place following the opening round of play at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 5-under 283 and trail tournament co-leaders Missouri and South Carolina by two shots.

UVa freshman Derek Bard is one of three players who share the lead following the opening round. Bard shot 4-under 68 and is tied by South Carolina’s Ben Dietrich and the College of Charleston’s Josh Lorenzetti. Bard had five birdies and one bogey during his round.

Virginia’s other opening round scores included a 71 by David Pastore, 72s by Denny McCarthy and Ben Rusch and a 75 by Jimmy Stanger.

The 54-hole tournament runs through Tuesday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
