CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (4-6, 0-3 ACC) opens a two-game homestand by hosting Old Dominion (3-6) on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
The two teams have played one another at least once a year every year since 1980 with Virginia leading the all-time series 36-1. UVa is 16-0 in Charlottesville against ODU with the Monarch’s only victory over the Cavaliers coming in a 13-10 game in Norfolk during the 2009 season. Virginia has won the last four meetings including a 16-12 victory last season at ODU. Juniors Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y), Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Ashlee Warner (Corning, N.Y.) and sophomore Kelly Boyd (Baltimore, Md.) all had hat tricks in last year’s contest. Bocklet and Warner also had two assists apiece.
Both teams come into the game trying to rebound from losses last Saturday (March 22) with the Cavaliers falling 16-11 at No. 8 Duke and the Monarchs losing 13-11 loss at American. Both teams are 2-2 in their last four games.Virginia averages 13.6 goals per game while Old Dominion scores 11.3. The two squads have very similar shooting percentages with UVa making 43.2 percent of its shots while ODU is shooting 43.6 percent. Virginia averages 14.5 draw controls while Old Dominion averages 10.7. Despite playing one fewer game, the Monarchs have caused 94 turnovers this season while Virginia has caused 72.
Senior Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) scored four goals at Duke, her fifth four-goal game of the year and her third-straight game with at least a hat trick. Blue now leads the team in goals with 29, ranking sixth in the ACC and 15th in the nation. She has scored a goal in each game this season and, going back to last year, has scored a goal in 16-straight games. Blue’s 2.90 goal-per-game average ranks fourth in the ACC and 25th in the nation.
At Duke, Swan snapped an 11-game goal-scoring streak that had extended back into last season’s NCAA Tournament. Swan had two assists against the Blue Devils, extending her points streak to 12 games. Swan is ninth in the ACC and 37th in the nation in points per game, averaging 3.90. Swan also had five draw controls against Duke. She is second in the ACC and 12th in the nation, averaging 5.20 draws per game.
On defense, senior Lauren Goerz (Danville, Calif.) and junior Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) are tied for sixth in the ACC, averaging 1.2 caused turnovers per game while freshman Maggie Preas (Rockville, Md.) is 12th in the ACC, averaging 1.0 caused turnovers per game. Goerz ranks ninth in the ACC in ground balls per game, averaging 1.8. Senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) is fifth in the ACC averaging 2.2 ground balls per game. Colgan had nine saves on Saturday against Duke, raising her season tally to 104 saves. Colgan ranks third in the nation and leads the ACC in saves per game, averaging 10.4 per contest.
Virginia concludes its current homestand on Tuesday, April 1 when it hosts American at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. UVa returns to ACC play on Saturday, April 5 when they play at Notre Dame in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Opening draw is at 3 p.m.
