PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The Virginia softball team dropped the series finale to Pittsburgh, 7-6, on a chilly Sunday afternoon (March 30) at Vartabedian Field. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 4-27 (1-13 ACC), while the Panthers improved to 11-14 (3-5 ACC).

UVa had a 6-5 lead going into the seventh when Katherine Kramer led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to tie the game before the Panthers loaded the bases after a single, an error and an intentional walk. Tori Nirschl was hit by a pitch to bring home Kaila Balatgek and win the game for Pitt.

In the top of the third, freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) walked and moved to second on a single by classmate Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.). Fellow freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) homered to left to give Virginia a 3-0 lead.

After Pitt took a 5-3 lead, the Cavaliers pulled within one on a single by freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) that scored senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) in the fourth and sophomore Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored on a Pitt error in the fifth to give UVa the lead.

Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pemproke Pines, Fla.) allowed seven runs (four earned) in six innings in the loss (4-23).

Pitt’s starter, Savannah King, gave up six runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings of work. Alexa Larkin (5-4) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Up next, the Cavaliers travel to Longwood for a doubleheader on April 2 at 4 p.m. in Farmville, Va.
