CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team was defeated in ACC play by North Carolina, 7-0 and 3-1, Saturday afternoon (April 5) at The Park. With the losses, the Cavaliers fell to 4-31 (1-15 ACC), while the Tar Heels improved to 20-16 (11-5 ACC).

Senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) three 5.1 innings of no-hit action in the second game before the Tar Heels scored three in the sixth to win, 3-1. The two hits allowed by Bowdren and sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who pitched the seventh, were the lowest mark of the season by the Cavalier pitching staff.

The Cavaliers scored their run in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) walked, moved to third on a single by fellow freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) and came home on a grounder by freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.).

Lauren Batten (4-3) pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits, to earn the win. Kendra Lynch got the final six outs for UNC to earn her first save.

In the first game, Lori Spingola (14-9) threw a four-hit shutout and Jenna Kelly hit a grand slam as the Tar Heels were victorious, 7-0. Chapdelaine (4-26) tossed a complete game and matched her career high with five strikeouts for UVa, but took the loss.

The two teams conclude the series Sunday (April 6) at The Park. Admission for UVa softball home games is free to the public.
