Chapdelaine Tosses Two Shutouts as Virginia Sweeps Delaware State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched the first two shutouts of her career as the Virginia softball team swept Delaware State, 8-0 and 2-0, Wednesday afternoon (April 9) at The Park. With the wins, the Cavaliers improved to 6-32, while the Hornets fell to 19-12.
It was the first time Virginia has recorded two shutouts in the same day since March 7, 2010 when UVa defeated Columbia, 8-0, and Delaware State, 9-0.
In the first game, freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI as the Cavaliers were victorious, 8-0, in five innings. Chapdelaine (6-26) only allowed four hits with two strikeouts in five innings to earn the shutout.
In the opening frame, Labshere hit a deep home run over the scoreboard in right field, scoring fellow freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) and giving the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers extended the lead to 4-0 on a double by senior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) that scored freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and a single by sophomore Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) that plated Johnson.
Virginia scored three in the fifth, including Labshere’s sixth home run of the season to lead off the inning, to finish off the game. Labshere, Sarcone and Park each scored two runs in the game.
Tara Tursellino (8-4) gave up eight runs in 4.1 innings in the loss.
In the second game, Chapdelaine was even better, allowing only two hits while inducing 15 groundouts in seven innings for the win.
The Cavaliers took the lead in the first when junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) came home on a Hornet error. UVa added another run in the third inning when Hughes scored on a single by freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.).
Vanessa Ciocatto (7-5) pitched a complete game for the Hornets, allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings.
Up next, Virginia hits the road this weekend (April 12-13) for a three-game series against in-state rival Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start, while Sunday’s first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
