No. 16 Virginia Fell 13-8 at No. 2 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (8-7, 2-4 ACC) had a four-game win streak snapped with a 13-8 loss at No. 2 Maryland (15-1, 5-1 ACC) on Sunday (April 13) in College Park, Md.
The Cavaliers hung with the Terrapins through the first 45 minutes of the game, tying the score five times including an unassisted goal from junior Casey Bocklet (South Salem, N.Y.) that knotted the contest at 8-8 with 16:33 remaining, but Maryland finished strong, scoring the final five goals of the game to earn the victory.
Junior Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) led Virginia with five points, scoring two goals with three assists. Sophomore Kelly Boyd (Baltimore, Md.) scored two goals with an assist.
Maryland’s Brooke Griffin scored five goals with an assist. Taylor Cummings scored three goals with two assists.
“Unforced errors and draw controls down the stretch were the difference for us in the game,” said Virginia head coach Julie Myers. “We didn’t get many draws, which is something we aren’t used to. We needed more possessions. For that first 48 minutes, we were pretty good, but one mistake turned into a second. There were too many unforced mistakes down the stretch.”
Maryland outshot Virginia 36-26 including a 17-10 edge in the second half. The Terrapins won 15 draw controls to Virginia’s eight, including winning six-consecutive draws as they made their late-second half charge.
Freshman Posey Valis (Baltimore, Md.) tied the game, 1-1, on a free position shot with 22:49 remaining in the first half. With Virginia trailing 5-3, back-to-back goals by Swan knotted the game a second time with 3:08 remaining in the opening period. Maryland scored with just under two minutes left before halftime, but Swan found Boyd in front of the net with six seconds left on the clock to send the game into the break tied at six.
When play resumed, Maryland quickly regained the lead, scoring 15 seconds into the second half. Junior Daniela Eppler (Baltimore, Md.) took a pass from Swan and smashed it into the net from the left side to tie the game at seven with 25:18 remaining. Maryland took another one-point lead with just under 20 minutes remaining. Bocklet tied the game for the final time three minutes and 17 seconds later.
Maryland started its 5-0 run with back-to-back goals 26 seconds apart with just over 11 minutes left in the game. The Terps added an unassisted score by Cumming with seven minutes left to take their first three-goal lead of the game. The Terrapins added another goal with four minutes left and another score in the final 30 seconds of the game to improve to 15-1 on the season.
“I also thought our shooters were a little off today, but I thought Maryland’s goalie and their defense did a nice job of making that happen,” Myers said. “When Maryland needed a save, they seemed to come up with it. When we needed a stop in transition, we seemed to struggle a little bit.”
Virginia senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) and Maryland’s Abbey Clipp made 10 saves apiece.
Virginia closes out the regular season on Wednesday, April 16 in a 6 p.m. game at Virginia Tech. The 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship, hosted by Boston College, will be held April 24-27 in Newton, Mass.
