CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 18 Princeton (11-6) faces No. 8 Penn State (10-7) on Friday (May 9) at 4 p.m. in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.

The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team earned a first-round bye as one of the top-six seeded teams in the tournament and will take on the winner of Friday’s game on Sunday, May 11 at 4 p.m. The winner of Sunday’s game will advance to play the winner of the first and second round games being contested in Chapel Hill, N.C. in a quarterfinal match-up on May 17 at a location to be determined.

Princeton leads the all-time series with Penn State, 21-13 since the teams first met in 1982. Penn State won this year’s meeting a 13-12 game, ending a five-game win streak for Princeton in the series. Two of the last four meetings have been one-goal games. This is the fourth NCAA tournament meeting for the teams, but the first on neutral territory. Princeton hosted Penn State on three previous occasions and is 2-1 in those games.

Princeton makes its 22nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers were co-champions in the Ivy League and finished second at the Ivy League Tournament. Princeton is currently ranked No. 18 in the IWLCA poll and No. 17 in the Inside Lacrosse poll.

Princeton finished the season going 9-2 in their last 11 games. Senior Sarah Lloyd was the unanimous selection for 2014 Ivy League Midfielder of the Year. She was named the 2013 Ivy League Attacker of the Year, a year after being named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year when she was a second-team all-league pick. Joining Lloyd on the All-Ivy League First Team are junior attacker Erin McMunn, junior midfielder Erin Slifer and senior defender Colleen Smith. Sophomore defender Liz Bannantine earned second-team honors.

The Nittany Lions will compete in the NCAA tournament for the 20th time. Penn State has earned three straight NCAA tournament berths for the first time since 1995-97 and are 16-17 all-time in NCAA tournament games.

The Lions are averaging 13.06 goals per game and are holding their opponents to 9.71 per game. Penn State had regular-season victories over No. 12 Loyola (18-11) and No. 7 Johns Hopkins (12-10) and close losses to No. 6 Northwestern (5-4) and No. 17 Ohio State (10-9). Lauren Purvis was named the American Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Purvis, along with sophomore midfielder Madison Cyr, earned All-ALC first team honors, while attacker Maggie McCormick and midfielder Jenna Mosketti were tabbed to the second team.
