Five Virginia Women's Lacrosse Players Earn IWLCA All-South Region Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team had five players earn Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-South Region honors with senior attacker Liza Blue (Butler, Md.), senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.), junior defender Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) and senior attacker Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) being named to the first team. Senior midfielder Maddy Keeshan (Greenwich, Ct.) earned second-team honors.

The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on one of the all-region teams for 2014. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on Monday, May 19. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

Liza Blue, who logged her 12th hat trick of the season in Virginia’s victory over Princeton on Sunday, is ranked sixth in the ACC and 26th in the nation, averaging 2.79 goals per game. Blue is tied for the team lead with 53 goals this season and is second on the Cavaliers with 53 draw controls. This is her first all-region honor.

Liz Colgan, the only Cavalier to earn First Team All-ACC honors this season, was the lone goalkeeper on the all-region first team. Colgan is third in the nation with 186 saves this season, the fifth-highest single-season total in Cavalier history. Colgan leads the ACC at 9.79 saves per game and is tanked third with a 46.0 save percentage. This is her first All-Region honor.

Morgan Stephens, a Second Team All-ACC honoree this season, earned IWLCA All-South Region second-team honors in 2013. Stephens, who began the season as a midfielder, has been tasked with shutting down opponent’s top scoring threats since moving to defense. Stephens is ninth in the conference, averaging 1.0 caused turnovers per game. On the offensive end, Stephens has also scored 18 goals with 10 assists.

Courtney Swan, who also earned Second Team All-ACC honors this season, is tied with Blue for the team goal scoring lead with 53, but leads the team in assists (26) and total points (79). Swan, who scored four goals with a pair of assists on Sunday against Princeton, is ranked fifth in the ACC and 13th in the nation, averaging 4.16 points per game. Swan, who is ranked third in the ACC with 91 draw controls this season, is six draw controls shy of tying the Virginia single-season mark of 97 set in 2010 by Brittany Kalkstein. In three seasons, Swan’s 182 career draws currently ranks third in the Cavalier record book and is 13 away from tying Lauren Aumiller (2000-03) for second place at 195. This is her first all-region honor.

Maddy Keeshan, a co-captain for the Cavaliers, is fourth on the team with a career-high 30 goals. Keeshan is also tied for second on the team with 33 ground balls and is third with 22 draw controls. Keeshan logged her fifth hat trick of the season with a three-goal performance in the NCAA Tournament second-round victory over Princeton.

Since 1985 when the IWLCA began presenting the awards, Virginia players have earned first or second-team all-region honors 126 times.
