Columbia, Mo. – The No. 11 Virginia men’s golf team is in third place after the opening round of the NCAA Regional being held in Columbia, Mo., at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The top five teams from the 54-hole event will advance to the NCAA Championships.

Virginia opened play in the blustery, rainy conditions by shooting 3-under 285. The region’s top seed, second-ranked Oklahoma State, leads the 14-team field at 16-under 272. Host school Missouri is second at 7-under 281.

Senior David Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.) led the Cavaliers by shooting 4-under 68 to end the round tied for third place. His round featured eight birdies and four bogeys. Pastore led the team in scoring in three of its last four tournaments.

Junior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) was just one shot behind Pastore on the leaderboard at 3-under 69, good for fifth place. He finished strong with three birdies on his final five holes.

Freshman Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) completed his first NCAA regional at even par 72 to finish 12th while junior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) shot 76 and freshman Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) carded a score of 79. Park is 46th place and Stanger is 64th.

Oklahoma State’s Jordan Niebrugge leads the field after shooting 7-under 65.

Virginia will tee off at 9:10 a.m. CT Friday to start its second round. The Cavaliers will be paired with Oklahoma State and Missouri.
