Columbia, Mo. – For the second consecutive year, Virginia men’s golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) has earned a berth to the NCAA Championships as an individual competitor. McCarthy placed sixth at the NCAA Regional in Columbia, Mo., and received the bid as the highest finishing individual not playing for one of the five teams advancing from the site to the national tournament.

Despite shooting 12-under 276 during the final round, the 11th-ranked Cavaliers finished seventh and did not advance to the NCAAs for the second consecutive year. UVa’s 54-hole total was even par 864.

Oklahoma State won the tournament at 33-under 831. Arkansas was second at 836, Missouri was third at 837 and LSU and Iowa State tied for fourth at 849, 15 strokes ahead of the Cavaliers.

McCarthy, a junior, will be making his third consecutive trip to the NCAAs. He was 77th in 2012 when Virginia finished 22nd in the team competition. He placed 22nd at the NCAAs last season on the way to earning honorable mention All-America honors.

McCarthy played bogey-free Saturday, recording five birdies during his round to shoot 67. He edged out teammate David Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.) for the individual berth, shooting 7-under 209 for the tournament. Pastore was one stroke behind McCarthy in 11th place at 210. A senior, Pastore also had five birdies, but a bogey on his 10th hole proved to be the difference in him forcing a playoff with McCarthy for the right to go the NCAA Championships.

UVa freshman Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) shot 2-under 70 during the final round to improve to 21st at 220. Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) recorded a score of 71 and was 52nd at 225. Freshman Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) was 64th at 230. He shot 73 on Saturday.

Missouri’s Emilio Cuartero took medalist honors at 11-under 205.

The NCAA Championships take place May 23-26 in Hutchinson, Kan., at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The individual champion will be crowned after 72 holes of stroke play. Following the first 54 holes, the top 40 individuals plus ties will advance to the final round of stroke play.
