Four Virginia Players Earn IWLCA All-America Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team had four players earn Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-America honors with senior goalkeeper Liz Colgan (Cockeysville, Md.) being named to the first team. Junior defender Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) and junior attacker Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) earned second-team honors while senior attacker Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) was named to the third team.

The IWLCA honored 48 student-athletes in Division I with a selection on the All-America teams for 2014. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-America banquet on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King Prussia, Pa.

Colgan, the only Cavalier to earn First Team All-ACC honors this season, was the lone goalkeeper on the all-region first team and is the only goalkeeper to earn First Team All-America honors this season. Colgan is third in the nation with 195 saves this season, the fifth-highest single-season total in Cavalier history. Colgan leads the ACC at 9.75 saves per game and is tanked third with a 46.2 save percentage. Colgan is the first Virginia player to earn First-Team All-America honors since Brittany Kalkstein in 2010 and is the first goalkeeper to be a First-Team All-American since Michelle Cusimano earned the accolade in the 1995 and 1996 seasons. This is Colgan’s first All-America honor.

Stephens, a Second Team All-ACC honoree this season, earned IWLCA All-South Region second-team honors in 2013 and was named to the first team this year. Stephens, who began the season as a midfielder, has been tasked with shutting down opponent’s top scoring threats since moving to defense. Stephens is ninth in the conference, averaging 1.0 caused turnovers per game. On the offensive end, Stephens has also scored 18 goals with 10 assists.

Swan, who also named Second Team All-ACC and IWLCA First Team All-Region this season and was a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award, leads the team in points (79), is tied for second with 26 assists and is second on the team with 53 goals. Swan, who scored four goals with a pair of assists in the NCAA Tournament second-round victory over Princeton, is ranked fifth in the ACC and 13th in the nation, averaging 4.16 points per game. Swan, who is ranked third in the ACC with 92 draw controls this season, is six five draw controls shy of tying the Virginia single-season mark of 97 set in 2010 by Brittany Kalkstein. In three seasons, Swan’s 183 career draws currently ranks third in the Cavalier record book and is 12 away from tying Lauren Aumiller (2000-03) for second place at 195. This is her first All-America honor.

Blue, who logged her 12th hat trick of the season in Virginia’s victory over Princeton, leads the team with 55 goals this season and is second on the Cavaliers in points (65) and draw controls (56). Blue is ranked sixth in the ACC and 26th in the nation, averaging 2.79 goals per game. This is her first All-America honor.

Virginia has had 67 different Cavaliers named to an All-America team, winning the honors 109 times since 1980.
