Porco Named ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia women’s tennis associate head coach Troy Porco was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Assistant Coach of the Year, announced Tuesday (May 20) during the ITA awards ceremony in conjunction with the NCAA Championships.
Porco, who is in his ninth season at Virginia, helped the Cavaliers to a school-best 24 wins en route to their first NCAA quarterfinal appearance this year. In addition, the Cavaliers earned a share of their first ACC regular-season title and captured their first ACC Championship title with victories against Georgia Tech, Miami and Duke. Virginia also posted its second victory over a top-ranked team in school history, defeating then-No. 1 Duke, 5-2, on Feb. 21.
“I speak for our entire team when I say that we are so happy for Troy and so proud of him for being named the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year,” Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “In over 23 years of collegiate coaching, I can honestly say there has never been a coach more deserving of this recognition and honor than Troy. The number of other coaches and peers that have expressed this same sentiment is amazing and speaks to the job Troy does every single day. I am very, very fortunate to share this coaching role at UVa with Troy and our program is far better because of him. And as great as he is as a coach, Troy is even a better person. Congratulations to Troy on this great accomplishment.”
Virginia closes out the 2014 season with four individuals competing at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, which begin Wednesday (May 21) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia. Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) will compete in singles and Elbaba and Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) will compete in doubles.
In singles round of 64 action on Wednesday, fourth-seeded Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) plays No. 51 Krista Hardebeck of Stanford. Collins battles Northwestern’s Veronica Corning and Nauta plays third-seeded Kristie Ahn of Stanford.
In doubles round of 32 play on Thursday (May 22), No. 5-8 seed Elbaba and Pierson battle USC’s Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz.
