TOWSON, Md. – Virginia women’s lacrosse junior attacker Courtney Swan (Vero Beach, Fla.) was named the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship.

Swan, majoring in kinesiology, currently carries a 3.801 GPA. She was presented with the award during the women’s lacrosse banquet on Thursday evening in Towson, Md.

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA in the 2009-10 season, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships. Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Swan becomes the second Virginia student-athlete to earn the distinction. Lauren Elstein (’10) earned the NCAA Elite 88 award, as the honor was then called, during the 2009 field hockey national championships.

Swan, an IWLCA Second-Team All-American and a IWLCA First-Team All-Region and Second-Team All-ACC honoree who was also a nominee for the Tewaaraton Award, leads the team in points (79) and draw controls (92) and is second in goals (53) and assists (26).
