Virginia rising senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) dominated the 93rd Amateur Championship of the Maryland State Golf Association to win the title for the second straight year. McCarthy defeated Chris Baloga 8 and 7 in Sunday’s 36-hole match play final.

The tournament was held at the East Course at Baltimore Country Club.

McCarthy took the tournament’s automatic exemption as the defending champion to bypass the stroke play portion of the tournament. He downed David Nocar 7 and 5 to open match play and beat Nick Sorkin 3 and 2 in the second round. On Saturday, McCarthy used a 5 and 4 win against Mike Blasey to reach the semifinals and then defeated Ben Warnquist 3 and 2 to reach Sunday’s final.

McCarthy will head to the 119th British Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush & Portstewart on June 16-21.

The first stage of the Championship involves 288 players each of whom plays two rounds of 18 holes, one to be played on each of the two courses. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place will compete in the match play stage of the Championship. Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes except the Final which will be over 36 holes.
