Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia junior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) was named the 2014 Virginia Sports Information Director’s (VaSID) Golfer the Year, while his freshman teammate Derek Bard was named VaSID Rookie of the Year.

McCarthy and senior teammate David Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.) were named first-team all-state while senior Ben Rusch (Weinfelden, Switzerland) was a second-team pick.

McCarthy finished his junior year with a 70.38 stroke average and he was ranked No. 8 in the final Golfstat individual rankings. He was the runner-up at the ACC Championships and placed sixth at the NCAA Columbia Regional. He also finished in sixth place at the NCAA Championships, UVa’s second-best individual finish in program history. McCarthy carded a four-under par 206 (65-71-70) on the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Bard, who hails from New Hartford, N.Y., finished his first season in Charlottesville with a 72.20 stroke average and ranked as the No. 25 freshman in the country by Golfstat. He carded five sub-70 rounds during the 2013-14 season, including an eight-under par 64 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. He had three top-10 finishes on the year.

Both Rusch and Pastore joined McCarthy on the PING All-East Region team. Rusch was second on the team with a 71.43 stroke average while Pastore was third at 71.68. Rusch was also named to the All-ACC squad along with McCarthy.
